Program Description
The College of Nursing offers a 4 consecutive semester nursing program that begins in the FALL and SPRING semester.
Nursing students first complete their prerequisite courses and other university requirements (such as general education requirements) as a pre-nursing major at the University of Utah or another college/university. Most students complete their prerequisites and other required courses in two years. Declaration of the pre-nursing major at the University of Utah does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.
The curriculum in the nursing program provides learning experiences in health promotion, acute care, primary care, population health from community and global perspectives, social disparities and determinants of health, health care policy, and health care organization and systems. Students receive supervised clinical learning experiences with clients in a variety of settings for approximately 12-24 hours per week. Opportunities to participate in research, community engaged learning, and leadership experiences are integrated throughout the program.

RN to BS Program
The online RN to BS program (RN-BS) and RN to BS Geriatric Nursing Leadership emphasis (RN-BS GNL) at the University of Utah are designed for licensed registered nurses who are working professionals desiring career mobility, professional development, and bachelor-level nursing competencies with an optional emphasis in geriatric nursing leadership. The RN-BS program can be completed in two, three, or four consecutive semesters. Students in the RN-BS program have the option of beginning the program in the spring, summer, or fall semester. Students in the RN-BS GNL emphasis may begin any semester and complete the program in three or four consecutive semesters (fall semester starts may complete the GNL emphasis in two semesters). Both options are offered fully online.
The curriculum in the RN-BS program and RN-BS GNL emphasis provide learning experiences in health promotion, health care disparities, global and public health nursing, leadership, and health policy. Students complete a clinical capstone in their fourth semester. Exposure to nursing research and evidence-based practice is integrated throughout the program. The RN-BS GNL emphasis is designed to improve geriatric nursing care, incorporate the principles of cultural competency in the care of elders, focus on leadership skills and competencies, include principles of supervising culturally diverse workers, enhance geriatric clinical content in courses, and emphasize the care of older adults in all settings. Students who choose the RN-BS GNL emphasis will take GERON 5100 Research in Aging in place of NURS 3108 Evidence Based Practice, and must take an assigned elective, GERON 5050 Best Practices in Geriatrics. Completion of the RN-BS GNL emphasis is indicated on the student’s transcript.
