Simple Requirements
Choose one course from each area.
Complete 16 credits of foreign language courses 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020 in one language.
Complete 6 credits of upper division foreign language courses, taught in the target language.
Complete 6 Credits of upper division (3000+) culture electives from the approved course list on the website.
Students select one of four focus areas and then complete the additional requirements and electives as specified. Each of the focus areas are internally scaffolded with requirements of their own. These focus area requirements combine courses from Philosophy and History. A Philosophy course familiarizes students with some of the fundamental ethical and analytical dimensions of the themes or issues in question. A History course allows students to understand the specific, localized, and highly particular conditions that have produced the issues and conditioned the perspectives at stake, and which are necessary to envision productive responses to them.
While the particular course in Philosophy is issue-specific and can therefore be specified as one of the focus area requirements, the most appropriate History course(s) depend(s) upon the time and place of interest to the student and therefore cannot be specified quite so easily. The most appropriate History course(s) are to be selected in conversation with relevant faculty and especially the student’s major advisor. Any of the History courses identified under each focus area as relevant electives may be taken to satisfy the focus area requirement. However, the history courses listed do not exhaust all possible options; rather, the courses listed from History are only those that may bear on the topic in ways that may not be immediately apparent to non-specialists. These are specified for the sake of clarity rather than priority. Hence, also, the list of relevant History courses is not comprehensive.
