PhilosophyDoctor of Philosophy
Ability to read and analyze philosophical texts, both contemporary and historical. (Evidence of learning will be GSQE)
Broad background in the following philosophical areas: Ethics and Value Theory, Metaphysics, Epistemology and Philosophy of Science, History of Philosophy, Logic and Formal Methods. (Evidence of learning will be B+ or better grades in courses in the first three areas, B or better for Logic and Formal methods.)
Mastery of subject matter content in areas of competence at a level supporting ability to teach undergraduate classes. (Evidence of learning will be B+ or better grades in courses.)
Mastery of subject matter content in area of specialization at a level supporting research and ability to teach advanced (graduate-level) classes. (Evidence of learning will be B+ or better grades in area of dissertation.)
Ability to write papers that are of professional quality. (Evidence of learning will be comp exam)
Ability to defend papers orally. (Evidence of learning will be oral comp exam)
Ability to conduct original research. (Evidence of learning will be dissertation.)
