Program Graduation Requirements

  • A minimum of 42 hours in PSY courses are required and only 15 of these credits can be lower-division courses.

  • 9 hours of PSY courses must be completed at the U of U and at least 6 of these must be upper-division.

  • A maximum of 6 credits of experiential learning can count towards the total 42 credits (Research Experience, Peer Advising, Teaching Assisting, Internships, Special Projects, and Independent Study).

  • All prerequisite, psychology, and allied courses must be completed with a C or better.

  • Advanced Placement (AP) score of 3 or higher fulfills the PSY 1010 requirement. Students cannot receive credit for PSY 1010 in the major if AP credit has or will be awarded.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Psychology Test score of 4 or higher fulfills the PSY 1010 requirement. Students cannot receive credit for PSY 1010 in the major if IB credit has or will be awarded.

  • PSY 3000, FCS 3210, SOC 3112, or SW 3000 can be used to complete the Psychology statistics requirement.

  • Out of the Psychology elective credits, no more than one course can come from the following list: ED PS 3500, ED PS 5060, ED PS 5061, ED PS 5062, ED PS 5063, ED PS 5064, ED PS 5065, ED PS 5066, ED PS 5067, ED PS 5068, ED PS 5069, ED PS 5070, ED PS 5072, ED PS 5073, ED PS 5074, ED PS 5960, KINES 3340, KINES 3350, ANTH 3481, SW 3400, SW 3050, H EDU 3350, SOC 3020, LING 3190, FCS 5305.

Choose from among all psychology course offerings to complete the 42 credit-hour PSY requirement with only 15 of these credits allowed to be lower-division courses. Lower-division courses are any at the 1000 or 2000 level. Up to 6 hours of Experiential Learning can be counted towards the 42 credits hours; PSY 4800-4806, PSY 4910, PSY 4890, PSY 4955, PSY 4920, PSY 5950, and internships with approval.

Out of the Psychology elective credits, no more than one course can come from the following list: ED PS 3500, ED PS 5060, ED PS 5061, ED PS 5062, ED PS 5063, ED PS 5064, ED PS 5065, ED PS 5066, ED PS 5067, ED PS 5068, ED PS 5069, ED PS 5070, ED PS 5072, ED PS 5073, ED PS 5074, ED PS 5960, KINES 3340, KINES 3350, ANTH 3481, SW 3400, SW 3050, H EDU 3350, SOC 3020, LING 3190, FCS 5305

Earn at least 10 credits
AND

Complete 12 credit hours of which 6 must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or above); waived with completion of a second major, minor, or certificate. All courses must be completed with a grade of ‘C’ or better. The goal of this requirement is to foster a broader educational base for psychology majors, consistent with the general aims of a liberal arts degree. Allied hours are any course taken in the following departments: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, City and Metropolitan Planning, Communication, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Criminology, Economics, Educational Psychology, Ethnic Studies, Family and Consumer Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, Gerontology, Health Promotion and Education, Honors, Linguistics, Mathematics, Philosophy & Cognitive Science, Political Science, Social Work, Sociology, Special Education, and Writing. KINES 3340 and KINES 3350 may also count for Allied Hours. For students completing a second major or minor, this requirement is waived because these fulfill the same goals of fostering a broader educational base for psychology majors.
