The Robotics Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree consists of 47 credits post-BS, or as few as 26 credits post-MS, depending on coursework and the institution granting the MS degree.
The 47 credits shall consist of 30 credits of coursework (subject to supervisory committee approval), 3 credits of seminars, and 14 dissertation credits.
Per graduate school policy (https://gradschool.utah.edu/navigating-grad-school/graduate-policies/credit.php), students pursuing the Robotics Graduate Certificate can transfer up to 15 approved credits towards the degree requirements, which is limited to 9 non-matriculated credits, but any student can transfer approved credits to reach up to 15 approved credits applied towards course work requirements.
Students stacking upon a University of Utah MS degree can waive up to 21 approved credits, resulting in the 26 credits post MS indicated above.
Students stacking upon a MS degree from a university besides the University of Utah can waive up to 18 approved credits.
Again, all coursework is subject to faculty committee approval, and could be more required coursework than the numbers indicated here.
To graduate, students must:
earn a B- grade in all courses
a 3.0 GPA or higher in all courses
successfully complete a PhD Qualifying examination for admission to candidacy
complete a research proposal defense
successfully defend their dissertation before their supervisory committee.
