Program Graduation Requirements

Courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Simple Requirements

Fulfill ALL of the following requirements:

Other approved upper-division course(s) on Cultural or Linguistic Diversity.

Students who hold a valid Utah teaching license in Special Education may not need to complete the following courses. Check with your faculty advisor.

Teacher License Requirements: Students may be recommended for licensure to the Utah State Office of Education following completion of the Teacher License Requirements, Praxis II examination and successful completion of background check.

Besides the courses above, other study requirements must be completed to earn the M.S. degree. 

  • Establish a Supervisory Committee

  • Qualifying Examination

  • Thesis (6 Credit Hours)

  • Continuous Enrollment

  • Master's Degree Residency Requirement

Students admitted to the program who do not have a background in the field of special education may have to take up to a maximum of six additional credit hours as determined by their graduate advisor.

Other Study Requirements:

*ASL Courses: Students are required to demonstrate intermediate sign language skills by passing, at a
minimum, ASL 2010 (pre-requisites apply), or equivalent on a proficiency assessment. Additional ASL
courses are encouraged, and advanced skills are required to teach in some educational settings. Students
may take ASL courses prior to and/or throughout the program. If ASL courses are needed, it is highly
recommended that the student begin the program one semester earlier (Spring start rather than
Summer).
