Program Description

The Certificate in Advanced General Dentistry in Endodontics program is designed to allow dental students interested in endodontics the opportunity to explore the field of endodontics at a deeper level than allowed in the dental school curriculum. This program will cover more advanced topics such as pain, retreatment, endodontic surgery, regenerative endodontics, vital pulp therapy, procedural misadventures, and practice management.

The course structure will be mostly in-person seminars and discussions. Students will prepare case portfolios and present cases to each other and discussing what went well, what could be improved, and what they learned from the case. Students will have the opportunity to practice more advanced procedures in the simulation lab such as accessing through crowned teeth, removing gutta percha from previously treated teeth, and locating calcified canals. Students will be exposed to working under the dental operating microscope and be expected to use it in the clinic. Students in this course will have to complete either an independent research project or a critically appraised topic report. These projects will be presented at the annual student research symposium and if elected at a local, state, or national meeting.

Students will also learn to critically evaluate literature. They will learn about materials and methods along with statistical analysis to prepare them as future lifelong learners.
