Program Description
The Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Women's Health (IGCWH) is a 15-credit program of study designed to equip the student with an interdisciplinary perspective on women's health and well-being. Our intent is not only to create an academy of practitioners well-versed in evidence-based approaches to the care of women as individuals, but also practitioners who understand primary care access, community interventions, and health policies on local, national and global levels pertaining to women. The overall purpose of this certificate is to provide students with an overview of key issues in the field of women's health. Students will develop conceptual skills to evaluate how social, cultural, and policy issues impact and are impacted by women's health issues. Please meet with the certificate advisor to obtain the Declaration of Intent form that provides more information about the IGCWH.
Program Admissions Requirements
An applicant for admission to this graduate certificate must meet the following minimum requirements:
A bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited college or university
An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
Policy for Social Work Students Obtaining the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Women’s Health
Social work students wanting to obtain the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Women’s Health (IGCWH) must be aware of the following:
You may only have six credit hours from courses outside the College of Social Work (CSW) count for the MSW degree. You may take more credits outside the CSW; however, only six credit hours will count toward the degree.
If a course is offered through the CSW and in another department, you must take the course in the CSW for the certificate.
The 2nd year practicum may count towards the certificate. The practicum needs to have a women’s health focus. Submit a paragraph to the certificate advisor about the internship and how it will fulfill the women’s health focus.
Some courses in other departments may not be applied to the MSW requirements.
As you are considering the IGCWH, you should schedule a meeting with the IGCWH academic advisor to review the courses you are planning to take to complete the certificate. The sooner we discuss your plans, the more concrete your class schedule will be.
Please note that although the courses listed on the IGCWH schedule are reviewed regularly; course semesters, days, times, and methods offered through other departments may change. Thus, courses on our list may not be offered as indicated. Please be flexible about these changes.
Finally, graduate students may take a maximum of 16 credits per semester. Exceptions may be made with approval from the MSW Director and Dean of the Graduate School. Please see the request form in module 2 of the Canvas MSW Community page.
*Please note, this certificate is not available to students enrolled in the MSW Online Program.
