Program Description

Electrical engineers change the way we interact with the world from computer circuitry, communications, optics, and power systems to putting smart electronics in our cars and smart wearable devices. Electrical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the study, application, and technology of electronics. Our department offers classes in basic electronic circuits, power, energy, robotics, controls, electromagnetics, microwaves, optics, radio frequency circuits, semiconductors, metamaterials, nanoelectronics, microsensors, microelectromechanical systems, communications, integrated circuits, digital circuits, embedded systems, and signal/image processing.

The electrical engineering minor begins with the core area of circuits, including three courses, with labs, that insure a significant practical and hands-on familiarity. Then eight or more credits can then be taken from the wide range of topics mentioned above. The concepts and skills learned can significantly enhance the capabilities of an engineer in another area by allowing them to understand and use the powerful tools of electrical engineering. The EE minor degree documents and communicates this improved capability.

Program Admissions Requirements

Students can apply for electrical engineering minor status if they have a Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

Admission requirements:

  • C or better in (MATH 1210 OR 1250 OR 1310 OR 1311) OR (AP Calc AB score of at least 4 OR AP Calc BC score of at least 3)

  • 2.8 or higher University of Utah GPA or Transfer GPA. The University of Utah GPA has priority over the Transfer GPA

Transfer Students

  • Maximum credit hours that can be transferred for a single course is 4 credit hours. All transfer classes are subject to evaluation and may be accepted or denied at the discretion of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
