Program Description

Students in the International and Area Studies (IAS) major choose to specialize in one of four areas of emphasis: Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, or International Studies. IAS majors then tailor the degree to suit their individual interests and aspirations, enrolling in discipline-specific courses drawn from across campus. Built upon the wide-ranging and internationally recognized resources at the University of Utah, the IAS program prepares students to live and work in the increasingly global world of the 21st century. It has long been one of the most popular undergraduate programs at the University. Its interdisciplinary methods, language study, and on-the-ground international experience make it a versatile and highly flexible major—either alone or in combination with other programs of study. Graduates of the program pursue careers across business, government, and non-profit sectors, including in such areas as journalism, global health, international development, international security, and many other fields.
