Embedded certificates are conferred concurrently with a degree.
Stand Alone certificates are conferred to a student who is not seeking a degree.

  • Complete at least 15 credits from the following types of courses:

    Coursework related to Latin America selected from at least two different academic programs or departments. Up to 9 credits of directed readings or a significant field research/study experience abroad may be used to fulfill this requirement. Practicum and internship experiences can also be used to fulfill this requirement with prior approval. Demonstrate intermediate-high reading and speaking proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Nahuatl or Quechua/Kichwa by passing an oral exam or completing a language course at the 3000 level or higher. Complete a graduate project (e.g. dissertation, master’s paper or thesis, internship, practicum, etc.) related to Latin America. In lieu of a graduate project, a student may complete an additional 3 credits of Latin America-related coursework There are no required classes. Students may choose elective classes from the full list of approved graduate classes taught across the university.
