Program Graduation Requirements
Maintain a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Complete all technical coursework with a grade of C or better. (All courses must be taken for a letter grade except for ME EN 5910, which requires a CR grade to pass. Courses may be repeated only once, and the second grade will replace the first grade.)
Earn a 2.3 cumulative GPA in the following upper division core ME EN courses:
3000, 3220, 3230, 3310, 3315, 3400, 3650, 3710, 4650
Complete 6 of the required technical elective credits by taking in-class 5000-level courses within the Mechanical Engineering department (includes ME EN, ROBOT, and SIME courses), excluding ME EN 4999, 5910, 5930, 5950 and ROBOT 5800, 5920, 5950. (This requirement is waived for students pursuing the Data Science Emphasis or Computer Science Minor. These students can complete all 12 technical elective credits with emphasis/minor courses that are on the list of approved courses outside of Mechanical Engineering.)
Earn a minimum of 30 credit hours from approved math and basic science courses. If transfer courses or AP exams carry fewer credits than their University of Utah equivalents, students may need to take additional math and basic science coursework beyond the major requirements.
Students in the Engineering Math track who took course prior to Fall 2026 (but have not completed course) must take course in order to complete Vector Calculus content. Starting Fall 2026, Vector Calculus will be incorporated into course.
Generally, required upper division ME courses (e.g. ME EN 3xxx level and ME EN 4xxx level) and technical electives must be taken at the University of Utah to earn a Bachelor’s degree or BS/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah. Some courses must be taken at the University of Utah. Any requests to consider classes as substitutes for these courses will automatically be rejected. Courses that cannot be transferred include Engineering Design I and II (e.g. ME EN 4000 and 4010, respectively).
Exceptions:
Up to two (2) Approved Upper Division Courses can be transferred to the University of Utah and used in place of Required Core Upper Division ME EN Courses.
Up to one (1) Approved Technical Elective Course can be transferred to the University of Utah and used in place of an Approved ME Technical Elective.Requirements:
No more than two courses in total (core courses + tech elective) can be transferred.
Any course being transferred must be approved via the Course Articulation Form.
Students must earn the required department minimum passing grade (currently a C) in any course for those credits to be transferred.
